Ok, my father gave me his old Bausch & Lomb telescope with an adapter for Minolta MC. Well, I was putting on the adapter the other day and it started to squeak. I stopped, saw that nothing looked bad, and tried to take it off. Lo-and-behold, the threads are crossed now. They have been stuck for a while and I was wondering how could I get It off. I've tried wd-40, pliers on the adapter, but I was wondering if a hairdryer would be ok? HELP!!
P.S. Its just a threaded adapter. |

Using a hairdryer will not work - you not be able to localise the heating just to the adapter. You need a very small propane flame, as produced by one of those small pen gas torches.
I find the following technique works nearly every time. Seal item in a plastic bag and then place in freezer until really cold. Ignite the torch and adjust to a very small hot flame. Remove item from freezer and plastic bag, then carefully apply the flame to the adapter ring. Do not move the flame around the ring, keep it in one place for a short while and then unscrew. I have a pair of heatproof gloves to hold the items whilst unscrewing, if you do not have something similar, hold the adapter with a pair of gland-nut pliers or similar tool. |
