This morning my wife was trying to load a new roll of film in our Maxxum 5. The camera sounds like it is advancing/loading the film, but the film does not wind on the roller.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

First I'd make sure the film is not wound too tightly in the canister. Second, make sure there isn't a kink or wrinkle in the leader, and that the sprocket holes have not torn out. For the threading to work, the film must lie pretty flat on the takeup spool, and engage the sprocket cleanly. If the leader is damaged, you can recut it with scissors and try again.

You might just try another roll of film. If nothing happens after all that, it's possible there's a mechanical malfunction. The takeup spool is powered by various gears, and includes a clutch, so something might be broken there.
