Anyone have ideas on why pictures would not be taking properly in auto setting? Battery issue or meter issue, or ???

Could be. What do you mean by "not taking properly"? Over or under exposure?

Did you check the ASA setting? Make sure that it is set to match the film, and make sure there isn't corrosion causing the mechanism to not register a reading.

a dead battery should lock the camera up at the Auto setting.
