I picked up a Petri FT 1000 with it's case, tripod, and various lens, as well as a Cannon A35F for $10. I have been able to get the Cannon in working order, however, I cannot get the film door to open on the Petri. I thought it would pop open after pulling up on the rewind lever, but it did not. I have called repair shops, but was told if it needs repair, they cannot repair it, so I might as well use it as decor or let my children play with it. Does anyone have any advise on how to get it open?

The Petri doesn't open that way. You have to pull up on the little metal tab on the top left of the body, just below the rewind crank. Here's a link to the manual:
