I have done exactly one camera repair in my life - removing the rear element of a Pentax lens to clean the the aperture blades with lighter fluid.

Now I have a newly acquired Argus C4 from eBay that is shredding the sprocket holes of any film that I feed into it. The problem is that the takeup reel drags the film over the sprocket gears and tears out the film between sprocket holes, so that I can't shoot through a roll.

I understand that the takeup reel is supposed to have some give in it, like a modern camera, so that if the film is tight it won't pull. What do I need to clean/adjust, and how do I get at it?

Are there exploded diagrams of C4 anywhere online?

I have some exploded views of the C4 but they don't show that detail - I've never encountered a problem with it. I expect if you remove the top cover you will find most of the works exposed at the top end, and if you need to remove the takeup spool for further attention there is a set screw at the bottom end of it that should let it come out of the camera. There should be a slip clutch inside the spool, not sure of its design but something like a coil spring wrapped around a shaft wouldn't surprise me.

Thanks, Rick! That was what I needed to know. I cleaned the clutch plate with methanol and now it turns like it is supposed to.
