I have a Yashica FR1 that I've had for 25 years. I tryed to use the shutter timer and it would not start the countdown to take the picture. Can someone help me please. |

The FR1 uses a mechanical clockwork timer. The original lubrication has probably given out. A quick fix you might try- peel back the leatherette around the self timer. Some versions will have a small hole or two covered with a round plate. If so, remove the plate and try to squirt a few drops of lighter fluid inside. The mechanism is directly behind the self timer lever. If that does not get it going, more extensive surgery will be needed. |

The lighter fluid is a good idea. It also works on stuck shutters and diaphrams. When you try the fluid on the timer, give it a little help by gently pressing on the lever after you hit the shutter release. |

All methods of shutter release on the FR series are electronic. The initiation of the self timer does not operate through the shutter release button but from the action of moving the small chrome lever underneath the timer wind lever. At the end of it's run the timer closes a switch on the back of the timer and releases the shutter. If further surgery is required, we covered it here in 2004: https://kyp.hauslendale.com/classics/forum/messages/6901/2437.html |
