I have two Kodak Autographic Junior 1-As, and I am wondering what is the safest way to clean the metal areas that are painted black? Thanks for your time. |

Depends on what you are cleaning off of it. Different solvents are used for different things.
for things that are water soluable: water
dead paint: automotive polishing compound
grease and hydrocarbon residue: napatha
pine pollen, most inks and cigarette tar: alcohol
blood: hydrogen peroxide
If it is not a valuable collectors item though, and if the paint is in bad shape, the best thing to do is usually to strip it and repaint. |

I don't think I've ever had to remove blood from a camera before! Then again, I've never swung my Kodak Medalist at someone's head either.  |

To get back to the OP's question. For cleaning painted areas I usually use Q-tips dipped in Alcohol.
Sometimes if the dirt is bad I start with a damp cloth first. |

Thanks for all of the information. I tried alcohol and Q-tips before I posted this, but I was worried that it left some of the paint rather "foggy" looking. |

Alcohol does leave a waxy residu when it reacts with acids from dirty fingerprints and the like. It should clean off with a fresh q-tip/towel/swab. If it did dissolve the paint than you would've seen it clearly on the Q-tips. |
