I bought a beautiful Sanderson Junior plate camera for £10, with a snapped-off locking lever. There is one each side of the lens mounting. My main lathe being too big for the purpose, I set about a C&S modelling lathe I purchased minus a chuck some years ago. Having made up an adaptor to fix an old drill chuck in place, & with a bit of fiddling to get everything running true, I am now ready to begin. Old locking mechanism is out. Bit old old lever finally removed from the body of the lock, meaning, I can start turning a replacement lever. Question. What thread attaches the lever to the mechanism? Closest I possess is BA. One supposes it is metric. I can live with using BA, but getting it absolutely right would be nice. |

I would question the use of metric threads on a camera made in Islington. However, as you have the original threaded end and the lock fitting it will be an easy job to measure pitch and diameter. If the figures do not point to an obvious thread, a search of the literature will tell you if it is one of the more specialised thread forms used on old optical equipment in the early 1900's. |

Thanks Glenn. Of course, what was I thinking of? Any pointers as to which publications I should look out for? Of course a distinct possibility is, that I will not have the correct die in my kit. Still, it's worth of try. |

Roger, You are looking for some early engineers pocket books - unfortunately I cannot remember the title of the one I have seen these threads listed in. Some of the early BS thread publications did mention some, ie Royal Microscopical Society etc. I know I sold all my early books on the subject when we did our last house move, but if you are really stuck, let me know and I will ask around |

Thank you. Post is nearly complete. Being the masochist I am, I have decided to turn a new block to fit it. This I can happily put a BA thread into, keeping the original-original. Does this kind pedantic thinking mean I am becoming the kind of sad old fart I've always dreaded turning into? Answers on a postcard. |
