Hello. I found a small table top all metal tripod at a flee market. It is heavy and in good condition. It is about 8 inches tall. The only markings I find are "Maxim" on the plate where the camera would mount. Under that plate it says "Japan". I have not been able to find anything about it doing Google searches.

Any information on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for you time,

d

A photograph might help. These things were churned out in their thousands and labelled with many wholesalers and retailers names.'Maxim' could be a registered trademark, so try a search within this area. In the 1950's/60's and 70's the photographic press was awash with ads for these somewhat questionable devices - every major dealer would have a draw full of various types. We all had them, but I only ever used mine to hold a slave flash head. A good normal tripod with an extension arm was a far better bet - more stable also.

Pull down on the feet and you will find it extends to much taller than 8". Basically, a generic tripod from an assembly line where they picked a new brand name every month to stamp on their product. One of mine says Alpine and the other says Hansa.

Thank you for all the information. I would not have realized that it extended. Wow, that is cool. Here is a pic of the tripod.

That could be a really great tool - I have a tiny mini-tripod about 3" tall, which is great for shooting from a very low level with a digital camera with a screen, but hopeless for anything that needs the viewfinder peering through. I reckon 8" is a great height to get a really low viewpoint, but still be able to use the finder.

Oh, I had one of those a long time ago. Don't remember what name was on it, but it wasn't Maxim. Nice heavy chrome on these, and a decent weight for such a small tripod. Pretty fragile looking though when fully extended.

An even better support for working low with heavy kit is a proper pro tripod with the center column reversed. Still in the digital age of light weight, these little devices might become very useful.
