I have a Topcon IC-1 that must have a good battery in it for the shutter to work and I am wondering if the Unirex is the same way. I purchased a nice outfit on *bay but haven't received it yet.

On the Unirex, both shutter and aperture should work even without a battery. You will of course have to calculate the exposure your self, as the meter isnīt operative.
