for a while when i first got this camera i was confused as to why the setting dial (ie to change from auto to manual) did not move round.
i then realised that the two little black buttons to the left are probably meant to do this for me but neither of them respond in any way when i press them.
otherwise the camera works fine but i really want to be able to start experimenting a little more as right now its stick on auto.
any advice much appreciated.

Jess,

the "setting dial" has a lock mechanism when set on Auto. It has a small white button on top, that needs to be fully pressed when changing from auto to manual. It's really small, and I usually have to press it with my nail while turning the "setting dial".
The two black buttons are used in manual mode, to increase/decrease shutter speed. They won't do anything until the "setting dial" is set on Manual.
