Sometimes before you fix a problem you first have to confirm that you actually have one.

I recently acquired a Fujica ST801 SLR. I think it may have a problem
with the meter and am trying to verify that.

The meter seems to work, but the problem (if it is a problem) is that
the shutter release must be fully-depressed for the meter circuit to
engage (i.e for the LEDs to indicate exposure level). I was under the
impression that the shutter release would be depressed halfway to
activate the meter.

The upshot of this is that I have to meter BEFORE winding the film
advance - or else the shutter trips while I'm metering.

The manual isn't entirely clear here. Should an ST801 be able to meter
before advancing the film? If so, I have a problem...and will start worrying about a solution.

Thanks.

The problem may just be a dirty meter contact. Try pressing and releasing the shutter button a couple dozen (or hundred) times. It's a little tedious, but it might spare you having to open the camera up. Good luck!
