The rubber shock absorber ring on the hub of the shutter detent latch has turned to black sticky gunk. Needs replacing. It is a major stripdown job as with withdrawal of the complete mirror-box assembly, lots of wires to desolder and resolder - and some of them very tricky to access. A typical symptom of your described fault is a heavy "clunk: as the film advance lever returns after the cocking-stroke. (The main heavy mirror-box spring is being tensioned but not latching and therefore letting go with a clunk). It is most unlikely there is anything at all wrong with theactual shutter. As to the replacement part. Procure a length of model aircraft glow-plug engine neoprene fuel-tube of correct diameter - and squarely slice off a 1/10" thick washer nice. The job will never need to be done again as long as the camera is a camera. There are actually 4 such shock absorbers in the ME Super - so one would not pull the mirror-box without replacing all four. All extisting grease on the mirror-box mechanism to be thoroughy cleaned off and the mechanism regreased with graphite grease or similar. But NOT lithium m grease. |
