Just picked up a few Yashica RF cameras.
The Electro 35 GS shutter is always fully open.

Self timer works. I hear the 'clunk' on winding.

(It also seems to have eaten the battery I left in for 48 hrs, but this may not be related)

The clunk on winding is normal. The shutter blades are most likly gumed and stuck open. Quite comon along with app blades. Not hard to fix but requires removal of the front elemment and or back element. Lighter fluid and q tips .

Would this cause the battery to be continually draining ?

Yes, Wsboyd, I think so, because the shutter opening time is effected by an electromagnet (hence the name of the camera). As long as sticky blades prevent the shutter from closing the battery is always on, this eating away all its energy, W.
