Actually, the variable magnification RF in the Canon II through VI models is pretty straight-forward. There's a rotating cell with holes on two sides, and lenses on two sides. You look through the holes in the middle magnification level, and through the lenses one way or the other in the other two. It's really a very simple and clever design!
The only major extra trick in the V and VI is the coupling to the pin in the accessory shoe.
It's the Canon 7 that has the really complicated RF.
Any competent old school camera repair place should be able to clean everything that can be cleaned in the RF. The only "unrepairable" part is the beam-splitter prism. It's two prisms (one with a lens built in), with one surface half-silvered and then glued to the other prism. Even the moving mirror can be cleaned, since it's a prism silvered on the back, rather than a front-silvered mirror.
