This subject comes up probably as often as Mercury batteries. It is so simple it really doesn't deserve much time in writing an indepth technical article. However, as anyone who has been tinkering very long knows, it is the first thing to do while diagnosing a camera...epecially an SLR.
Basically only newbies need to learn this. And an explanation really isn't very helpful because a newbie doesn't know the nomenclature or even where to start. What a newbie needs is a picture of his/her particular camera. Hence this message...
I could go into my (freezing at the moment) camera tinkering room and remove the bottom covers from about 15-20 of my cameras and snap photos...but I'm too darn lazy! How about we make this a community project?
On the next camera you open how about snapping the windlock area and drawing in an arrow with any extra info written directly on the pic. Then we'll post all these pics in a resetting article.
Worth a shot...

Opps, a little mis-communication between me and Kar Yan. That page only has a reprint of what I previously wrote in this thread...not the resetting paragraphs. We'll get it straightened out shortly.
The first wind lock example will be included. It is of the Minolta X-370.
