I have an antique auto rear view mirror that was gold plated. Unlike your camera mirrors, it is totally reflective. I need to have it "re-golded" but cannot find anyone to do it. All the mirror re-silvering places are no help. Any Ideas? Frank

You will need to find a company that specialises in Vapour Deposition/Coating. A thin gold deposit, followed by the usual aluminium deposit might provide the answer.

If you cannot find a specialist company, look for a camera restoration company that re-coats optics. They will not be able to help directly, but will be able to point you in the right direction.

Most manufacturers of Vacuum Vapour Coating equipment run test rigs, they might do you a one off if you ask.

The only other alternative may be to substitute gold chemistry for the silver chemistry in the DIY methods for making mirrors. There is one really good method for silvered mirrors,I think it is in the archive - this may or may not work on the large area you need.

There are some companies specialised in mirror restoring/restauration (NO camera mirrors, just mirrors used for interior decoration etc.). Feed Google with these keywords.
