I just received this camera and the film advance lever is stuck. Evidently it happened after the shutter button was pushed and the picture was taken. Now it will not advance. Does anyone know if this could be a costly repair? Electronics in the view finder are working good. The only thing I can think of is perhaps the last person who had it may have dropped it or something because film was in it when I got it.

Rick, This sometimes happens with these cameras, was the film wound all the way? Did you make the last exposure? Is the rewind button stuck? Try cranking the sprockets, remove battery check charge and replace battery. It is probably jammed on a "half-wind", usually the last frame. I usually remove the bottom plate and gently jiggle the cocking rack to free things up. I have all the A type Canons and they are quite easy to fix unless its electronic, then I put it back on the shelf.

I believe the AE-1, as well as all of the A series shut down when the battery is dead. Try replacing the battery, it should come to life again.
