A friend has a Canon AE1 that he has not used for many years, his son is taking a photography class in school and wants to use the camera. We cannot get the standard lens to go on the camera, it is the type that you turn the lens clockwise to lock it on, it won't fit tight against the body and won't turn at all. His telephoto lens is a Vivitar with the ring mount that turns and it goes on easily. What are we doing wrong?

Your bayonet-mount lens might not be set correctly for mounting. Please look at this picture, which shows a back-end view of a Canon bayonet mount lens, ready to be mounted on the camera:

Note that there are 2 red dots, one on the back and one on the edge of the barrel. To mount this lens, you hold it so that both red dots are at the top, press it against the camera body and twist clockwise.

If the 2 dots are not in the same location as shown here, the lens cannot be mounted. If this is the case, you need to try to get a grip on the rear face of the lens (the 2 protruding pins may help) and twist the outer mounting ring to the left (i think you may have to press the silver button to do this) as if you were trying to remove the lens from the camera. When the outer ring reaches the point where the 2 red dots are aligned, it should click into that position and then you can mount it.

If this is not your problem, I can't think of the next possibility.
