I am having a problem with an OM2n camera, it will not work in auto setting, the shutter will not reopen until I push the selector switch to “check.reset”.

Manual setting seems fine and I have tried the lens on a separate camera and there were no problems.

Batteries were dead but have changed them to with no effect.

does anyone have any suggestions?

Becky, this does not sound good. Any simple battery-type issue would have affected AUTO and MANUAL modes equally. It sounds like the AUTO meter circuit is out, it could be as simple as a broken wire or it could be something really fried, but in either case it's not something one deals with oneself. Choices would be to send it for service or to just heep using it in manual mode (you still have the equivalent of a good OM1 that's compatible with modern batteries, not a bad thing)...
