Does anyone know if the wind-on lever is easy/hard to repair? Half the time it jams and doesn't move at all, the rest of the time it has no tension so you can move the lever but it doesn't wind on the film. Could it simply need cleaning or is this more serious? If it can be cleaned, please advise how! Thanks.

I have had the top cover off the Nikon FE before. I would say its of medium level difficulty to remove, mostly because of the small circlip and components on the ASA/exposure compensation knob side. The leather cap on the advance lever can be removed by peeling it up and using a spanner wrench to engage the holes underneith, or simply by friction with a rubber pad in some cases. Once you pull the advance lever off the square post, be careful as its spring loaded. You have to rehook that spring and wind it the opposite way one turn when reinstalling.

Sorry I didn't keep any notes on the winding mechanism. Mine had a stuck frame counter.

The Tom Thomosy book on basic camera repair shows the Nikon FE in detail if you can find a copy. My library has it.
