I have a Konica auto S2 camera in mint condition. It has a brand new battery in it, a Varta V 625 U and the light meter works fine. However, the advance film lever won't move. I noticed that the rewind button is pushed in and won't release when the camera door is open or closed. Any suggestions?

I think you have got a typical case of stuck shutter. On the S2, the wind lever can only be moved if the shutter has performed his cycle successfully which seems not be the case. The rewind button is NOT supposed to spring back as you open the door - it should spring back as soon as you move the advance crank which is not possible now.

Follow the suggestions in the repair article about the Konica Auto S1.6 which is identical except for the faster lens.

I think I went to the site that you are referring to with all the pictures, but I'm not sure that would help. I took the camera to a local camera repair shop and was told that I have a fan type shutter with a lens that doesn't come off and a diaphram that is visible when the back of the camer is open. He turned the dials on the lens, put it in timer mode and said that since the diaphram isn't moving and the shutter isn't opening and closing that it can't be repaired. Is that true? He couldn't believe how great the camera looked (like it was never used) which is true--only used a few times. He stated that the rewind button isn't the problem. He claims that I should be able to push down the shutter button, which should release the shutter, release the cocking lever, and release the rewind button. Since that isn't happening, the problem is with the shutter fan blades, which can't be fixed. What is your opnion?

I am afraid that your repair guy does not seem to be too competent. I am very sure that the problem with your camera can be fixed. I had almost the same problem with an Auto-S2 (it was described like that) and could easily clean the shutter blades. Taking off the front part of the lens is no big problem.

Maybe the aperture is somewhat stuck, too (it does not have direct linkage to the aperture dial, it is moved by a rather weak spring) but this is not impossible to fix, too.

All of my several Auto S 2's when given to me were said to be beyond repair. One of them was in a terrible state and after repairing it myself (I was a complete novice in the business then !) it is especially this specimen that I use on a regular basis.
A repair shop is saying an Auto S 2 with functional meter cannot be repaired ?
I guess they are not only incompetent, that would be too euphemistic, but ignorant to an almost unbelievable degree, to put it mildly!
Forget about those "experts" and do the repair yourself ! If all else fails, try this link http://feuerbacher.net/photo/frame.html

BTW I once bought a Yashica Electro M5 (not just a high end model, rather the bottom of the line). Only problem was that the light meter was not working. It took about 30 minutes to fix the battery wire and to reassemble the camera. The guy who sold it told me he had sent it to the Yashica service and they stated the camera was beyond repair.

This makes sense econonomically-wise (I know companies who charge more than USD100 for one hour of labour of their service staff) but technically it was no problem.

I am just a simple amateur with no specialist tools or experience with camera repair, but I managed to fix a stuck shutter and aperture on my Konica Auto-S2 quite easily (thanks to the excellent help and advice provided on this list). So I would say give it a try. What have you got to lose?
