I have a X-700 I recived as a gift with lenses and extras. The camera is clean and works great. Only thing is the frame counter is not working. Any help would be great. Thanks |

More specifically how is it not working? For example: Stuck on one number? Doesn't reset? |

its shows the S in red but dose not advance with the winder movment. So I guess its stuck. |

Most likely you'll have to take the top off to clean the gears of the counter mechanism. But you should first check the pin on the inside of the camera that "tells" the camera the film chamber is shut; is this pin jammed, bent, or otherwise stuck? |

Broken frame counters are a common problem on the X-700, along with leaky capacitors and flash malfunctions. |

Not according to Ron. Both of my (used) X-700's have been clicking away flawlessly since day 1. |

It's funny how you get, say, older Nikon SLR owners together and they'll instantly (and loudly) point out problems with each other's Nikon, weak points, etc. While Canon, Contax, or Leica owners, if a bit more subdued, nevertheless encourage information sharing on camera problems.
But not Minolta fans. They always seem to circle the wagons and get defensive about anything perceived as a derogatory comment about any Minolta, no matter how poorly constructed. No Minolta ever broke down, no one knows anything bad about them. And yet why do the X-700 owner sites I've seen often contain detailed explanations on how to teardown cameras, replace capacitors, shutters, etc. Very mysterious.
It's not a fantasy that produces so many Minolta X-700, Canon AE1, and Nikon EM malfunction complaints. Check the posts on these pages sometime, or take a look at the 'as-is' shelf in a few camera shops. Add them up. A combination of first-generation electronics combined with extensive cost-savings on some critical internal parts does not make for longterm reliability. |

Fixed it. The counter dial has a plastic button on it that stops it turning back to far when the film door opens and the counter resets. If it moves to far back the drive gear can not move it forward with the advance. So I drived the disc and istalled a small palstic pin to act as the stop. Its works. Thanks for the help. |
