Does your SLR have a scratched, cracked or even missing mirror? There is an easy way to fix it. What you need is an old discarded Polaroid I-zone camera. You know, Polaroids last (?) attempt at the mass market. They can usually be found for next to nothing at flea-markets and jumble sales. Inside every such camera there is a mirror that reflects the image down onto the horizontally mounted film. The mirror is of exactly the right size to fit most SLRs. I used one to repair a Topcon, and it slotted in just as if it was made for that camera. If necessary it can be trimmed down to the right size. When you attach it, make sure you get the mirrored side up. Use a slightly elastic adhesive to make sure it won´t come of when you use the camera. And while you are at it, replace the mirror dampers as well.

Only really works if the thickness of mirror is correct for the particular make of camera being repaired. Also as has been pointed out recently in another post watch the thickness of the adhesive film, otherwise focus errors will appear.

Most cameras have some facility for adjustment, if you're close. Just be sure to check it!
