I have picked up a H-Matic F rangefinder. The batteries are dead and have been removed. Will the shutter fire without the batteries? When i look throught the film door I can't see the shutter opening. Also the film advance sometimes sticks.

No, the shutter on the Hi-Matic F does NOT open without batteries. The clicking sound you will hear when firing the shutter is the double-advance latch which is purely mechanical.
