Hi All,

I have heard that the G-III has a different CdS cell for the lightmeter, but apart from that are
there any other differences, like lens coating etc.?

Thanks,
AB

Canonet QL 17 is completely different camera than Canonet G-III QL 17. It is older and bigger. Some infos you can found there: http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/camera/series/f_net.html

Prior to Canon's extremely popular 'Made in Taiwan' Q17 GIII (1972) there was a less common but very similar compact Japanese version that some refer to as the Q17-L 'New Type' (1969). Internet search results should describe the slight differences. The original version of the Q17 (1965) was indeed a full size camera.

Actually, the made in Japan version of the 'New Type' QL17 was identical to the Taiwanese made GIII QL17. The only difference was that the GIII had a lightbulb built into its battery check system.

I believe the 'New Type' QL17 was Canon's original production run of the camera, before the manufacture got transferred to Taiwan.

Many of these pass through my hands - the Japanese version feels better, with practically no cost cutting involved. The later GIII did introduce more plastic in the non-stress areas.

Of course one should not mistake the original, larger bodied QL17, for the 'New' QL17. The 'New' QL17 has identical size and controls to the GIII, while the previous QL17 was a larger camera.

Just a little bit of Canon history.....

All the best,

Jan

As already mentioned there are the QL-17'new' and the QL-17 GIII. Main difference is the battery test system. On the GIII a small electronic assembly with the test circuit was added under the bottom plate. There are also minor interior differences (the QL-17'new' has mainly slotted screws, the GIII has crosspoint screws). Also, the lens coating is different. The manual of the GIII says that the GIII lens was redesigned but I don't know whether this was not a marketing hype.

Both versions came in black versions, too.
