Hi

I need to clean a Yashica lynx 5000 shutter and I wonder whether there is a way to remove the escape mechanism from the camera as a whole and soaking it in lighter fluid rather than cleaning it while it is on the camera.

There are some screws on the mechanism that suggest it can be taken out as a whole but I do not want to unscrew the wrong one and disssemble the escape mechanism by mistake.

There is a picture of the shutter on this page:

Thanks, Berk

On all leaf shutters I have seen it is no big problem to remove the escapement mechanism as a whole unit. Check which screws hold it to the bottom plate, if you remove the wrong ones you'll end up in a mess of tiny gears.. On some Copal shutters there is one screw at the pallet end holding the bottom plate of escapement to the shutter, and another one close to the other end going right through both plates of the escapement gear.

On Compur-type shutters (I only knew one japanese Compur clone, the Seikosha-Rapid) you should NOT remove the escapement because speeds are adjusted by shifting the escapement mechanism in oversized holes. You will have to check speeds after reassembly.

The method Daniel suggests for adjusting Compur shutters is not quite complete, it is much more difficult to get a clean 1/10 or 1/15 sec than to adjust it for 1 sec, and if you adjust it for 1 sec only 1/10 (1/15) might not run properly.
