I have a Vivitar XC-3 camera with a Vivitar (Cosina) 50F1.7 lens. The rubber focus ring on the lens is completely loose so it just slides loosely around without grabbing the lens. How is this fixed; must I cut it to reglue it? and what type of glue to use?

Slide ring just out of the location groove. Clean off any adhesive tape etc that might be revealed. Cut a length of double sided tape down to just less than half the width of the rubber ring and place 4 pieces at 12,3,6,9 o'clock on the centre line of the groove. Do not run a continuous length of tape around lens, the rubber will have stretched and will not seat properly on a continuous length of tape. Remove the pieces of backing tape and wet the exposed adhesive with well licked finger. Now wrap a piece of FULL WIDTH backing tape around the groove so that it will protrude from under the ring when it is eased into position. Position ring and gently pull out backing tape, then allow ring to settle in a warm room for a few hours. Then gently press all round the ring to ensure full contact.

Job done,no cutting ring or messy glue all over the barrel.
