What's the best way to remove the green corrosion on battery contacts? I tried alcohol and it was not very effective. Is there any other magic bullet?

Plain household white vinegar. Apply a little with a Q-tip and let it work. Remove. Repeat.

Do NOT scrape.

I'll second Donnie's method. I've had a lot of success with it. The only addition I would make is a final wipe over with isopropyl alcohol.

There is kindatool available called BatterySaver, looking a bit like a felt-tip pencil containing something acidous which cleans battery contacts quite successfully.

Do not scrape off the corrosion with a metal tool - once the galvanised surface is damaged the steel or bronze spring will be much more prone to corrosion.
