Does anyone know if this camera only trips the shutter if there is batteries in the battery chamber ? BTW, what would be an acceptable substitute for the batteries today? Mine came with two big button cells , marked NR52, by National (Panasonic?). Thanks for any help.

I think the ECR has the Seiko ESF shutter which is used (with some modifications) on the Hi-Matic E, Petri Computor, and some others. This shutter works only with batteries inserted. Most of these cameras were designed to accept PX640 mercury cells but for a rough test PX625 alkali cells plus spacers to fill up the battery chamber will do.
