I recently acquired a 1961 Zenit C and am left with two remaining problems after cleaning and lubricating it: firstly I am facing problems with the bottom loading of the film (I can't get the film in the right position/the sprocket doesn't align with the perforation and therefor keeps tearing the film). Any tips & tricks for this? Secondly the 1/30 keeps faltering (curtain sticks) whereas other speeds seem OK. Is this a common problem? Any advice will be greatly appreciated, JW- UTRECHT/THE NETHERLANDS |

The first problem with loading these (and zorkis and leicas) is that today's 35mm film has a shorter leader than it did when these were made. Cut the leader back til you have at least 4 inches of the upper edge cut away.... enough to reach all the way back to the film canister when the film goes into the camera. Now, attach the end to the takeup spool, pull out just enough leader to get both spools lined up with their places in the camera, and press them both into place at the same time. advance one frame before putting the baseplate back on, to make sure the spools are really all the way down into the camera (press gently on the end of the film cartridge and the takeup spool as you advance hte film). if all else fails, you can remove the lens, open the shutter on "B" and reach in from the front to push the pressure plate back and make sure the film gets into its proper place. as for the 1/30 second problem, i suspect you may have a stiff shutter curtain, and your higher speeds may not be as okay as they seem. it's hard to check this in these cameras, essentially a matter of either removing the body shell or shooting some film..... == |

Thanks Rick - cutting the film really helps indeed. |
