Hi Folks, I just noticed today that my Nikon F that I bought new back in the 60's has developed a problem. The slower speeds are inaccurate. 1/30 seem fine, 1/15th seems like about 1/2 a second, 1/8th is about 1 second but then 1/4, 1/2 and 1 second seem about right. I have noticed with the back off that there is a plate secured by 4 screws at the bottom of the camera which I assume covers the escapement mechanism. I have never tackled an SLR before. Is it safe to remove this plate or will springs etc head off in all directions. I replaced the bumper foam recently and I think that possibly some of the old rotted foam may have found its way into the gears. I am very attached to this camera and don't want to stuff it up. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Removing the bottom cover does not get you to the slow speed escapement. To do this requires much disassembly. You can remove the bottom cover safely, though. The top covers and associated parts, and front plate/mirror box must be removed and the speed escapement sets inside the bottom. If you're going to attempt this, you need a manual from somewhere.
