Is it possible to remove the split image mirror in a Canon AE-1 and still use the camera? Will this effect any preformance?

You must mean the split-image screen, right? The mirror's just a regular old first-surface mirror.

I guess you could remove the screen and stil use the camera, but I have to ask you how you plan on framing your shots and focusing them with no screen. Or are you thinking of replacing the screen with something else?
