I need some advise on repairing the light meter on a Canon AE-1. Wile metering, the needle drops to the bottom of the indicator every time, reading >f/1. The red light also works, and I have replaced the battery. The camera got wet a few years ago and I fear this might be the cause. Is there a simple way of dealing with this, or at least diagnosing the problem?

There are no Canon repair shops in my area, the closest being 4 hours away. No one local wants to touch it, or has any idea of what to do. I realize that the repair may be more trouble than it is worth, but the camera has a great deal of sentimental value.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
