I have a Minolta XD 5 and a Auto Electroflash 280PX flash which does not work anymore on the camera. The flash does work on another camera. Knowing this much, how would I approach this problem? What can I do to the hot shoe on my XD 5 to try to roslove this? (A good cleaning did not help.)

Could be the contacts under the shoe need cleaning. You will have to remove the top cover to examine/clean these contacts. Have you tried a different flash on this camera? Try a flash that has just one central contact and see if it fires.
