My trusty Canon AT-1 was in the camera bag for about 6 months. Pulled it out yesterday and found that the shutter does not open and the film advance lever will not move. I changed the battery and still no go. When I look through the viewfinder when I press the shutter release, the light meter needle moves a bit, I think indicating a current draw on the battery, but the shutter will not open. Any ideas of what's going on and how to fix it? I've had a quote from a local camera repair shop for about $200+, with an 8-12 wk wait but I'm kinda handy with the tools, so I may want to have a go at it...

Hi Ted,
It may be something you've already tried but I recently bought several Canons that were supposed to be "broken" for almost a song. I found in each case the battery was completely dead, but in the case of my Canon AT-1, I had the same trouble as yourself. I tried cleaning the camera contacts where they touch the battery and presto, 100 % working. Now I have 3 Canons for $45.00 Can. and 1 even came with a 50mm f1.4 woo hoo. Hope this works for you. Enjoy the Canon, nice camera. Curt in Canada.
