My wife's battered but brilliant XA3 thumbwheel wont move on.

Batteries etc ok.

The problem appears (!) to be at the top rather than problems with the wind-on cogs in the base.

Any thoughts on what the problem is? And if fixable how do I get into the top to have a look ?

many thanks

Alastair

Maybe the shutter hasn't fired from the last winding. When the clamshell is fully open, there is a cylindrical metal bearing that pushes into a switch. When the switch is closed, the meter is activated and the shutter is unlocked. I believe the shutter will not fire unless the clamshell is fully open, however it may fire when the clamshell is closed and the back is open...but I'm not positive. As I recall, you can work the clamshell off by removing the bottom plate (note where the longer screws go, and note that one is hidden beneath the self-timer lever) and lifting the bottom edge of the clamshell up and out. This would be my first thought.
