It's an epidemic, last week the counter died on my Pentax ME, now the counter has ceased to count on my Petri 7s. HELP !!!

This should not be too difficult to fix. Remove the top cover, and check the frame counter mechanism. On most cameras there are two detents: one is moved by a cam or a lever on the advance shaft and pushes the frame counter dial forward, another one is fixed and holds the dial in the respective position. Sometimes one of the many hairsprings in that mechanism gets misbent or slips from its post.
