I just want to say thank you to all of you for your input regarding the notorious Canon squeak. I've read and re-read a number of messages about how to quiet the squeak, but was a little hesitant about removing the top. I did read on a UK website where lube can be applied through the bottom of the camera, so I decided to take a shot at that procedure first. I didn't have the proper lube, for in my thinking something like 3 in 1 Oil would be too thick and uncontrolable, so, I first took a squeeze bottle with a small application top; in this case it was a plastic bottle of Bactine, drilled out the hole just enough to slide a tube from a WD-40 can it, so that it fit quite snugly. I then proceeded to mix up my own "home brew" of lube, with a tiny bit of Slick 50 and some lighter fluid. I removed the bottom of the AE1P, slid the tube down along side the left side of mirror cage, as you look at the front of the camera, applied a drop of my home brew and behold, the squeak stopped immediately. Once the bottom was off, the entire procedure took less than a minute to lube the mirror gear. Put the bottom back on [three screws], and now it's ready to go without the squeak. Then entire procedure probably took less than 3 minutes. I hope some of you will try this procedure from the bottom just to prove it wasn't a lucky fluke on my part. Thanks again for all the input.
