I have a Canon AE1 that does not seem work. When I set the camera up only a small round view can be seen. We took it to a camera shop and ask that they look at it and were immediately told it is missing the prism. We asked about the possibility of using the prism from another body and they said it was possible but would cost at least $160 dollars and there was not guarantee it would work. Any ideas about how we could resolve this problem.

check and make sure that fresnel is there--sounds like the view you get when it , not the prism, is missing. If it's gone, it is a big deal since the AE1 doesn't have interchangable screens as does the AE1P. Can't imagine how it would be gone.

I don't think the prism is missing - in this case you would see almost nothing through the viewfinder. I rather think that the fresnel lens and/or the focussing screen are missing. I have heard that it IS possible to swap (or to remove) the focussing screen on the AE1, too, although it is not as easy as on the AE1P. Maybe a previous owner has removed it.

the AE-1 needs to be stripped down to remove the focus screen. The AE-1 Program is customer interchangable, flips out from the front.
