Good Day to All,

I recently found a Retinette 1A in my garage. It belonged to my grandfather. Last week I had no understanding of cameras, but in the past few days my research on this camera has allowed me to learn a great deal (depth of field, circle of confusion, etc).

I said all that to say:

The film advancing lever functions, the film advances. The settings for distance, appeture, shutter speed function. Film can be loaded.
But...the shutter does not open, it does not function
When the shutter release button is depressed it unlocks the film, allowing it to advance, but it does not open the shutter.

Could one of you kind-hearted, wise-minded, good-people please help.

sounds like the shutter is gummed up or not being cocked on the wind stroke

I recently found an Retinette 1A in my garage; I replaced most of the missing srews from my old saved screws an dreplaced the view finder with an exsisting one. so now the only thing I need is a shutter release button. Mr. Geoff Jackson, when reparing an old camera like yours, you need to IMPROVISE. Like for myself, I just found parts in my garage to repair it. Your shutter is probably stuck by rust or just slightly rusted together. Unless you have a manual for it, don't take it apart. Use a small ear swab with a very small amount of oil or free enymes to help free the shutter(not alot of oil,not even a drop). DISCONTINUE trying to use until the shutter is free. Remember that you r putting stress oon the other machanisms trying to open the shuter when its stuck. It may cause more damage! Good luck.
