I just got a used FE, and am running a test roll through it. All manual settings seem fine, but it locks up in Auto...aperature stays closed, and won't advance the film. I move the dial off Auto, and it's back to normal. Batteries are good, meter works fine, but it no Auto program. Any ideas?

Forgot to mention, it's an E series lens I'm using now.

Batteries are fine, or else it'd only shoot on 1/90, the battery check light wouldn't come on, and the meter wouldn't register.

Hi Dave,

I read some diagnostic in the repair manual that seems to fit your case.

The shutter stays closed in Auto mode and the meter needle jumps to the A side when shutter release is pressed. Does your needle jump towards A ?

If so, they say it should be a short (4 possible shorts to check) under the top cover.

If this fits your case and if you feel like taking the top cover off (not straightforward for the unexperienced...), feel free to ask...

:)
Karim

I don't think it's a short...I've got a 35-70 3.3/4.5 zoom that works fine in auto. It's just with the E series lens. Is that normal? The E series works fine in manual mode, but not in auto. Weird.
