I was given an older Pentax S1a (with screw mount Takumar lens)which came from an estate. This older camera is still in pristine condition except that the mirror stays up & the shutter performance is erratic and sticks open @ speeds below 1/30th of a second. Although I've never dismantled an SLR before, I've removed the botton cover and found the gears/springs/levers perfectly clean.

I would love to get this camera working - any advice would be sincerely appreciated. I would tackle removing the top to inspect (and if necessary clean) if I had detailed instructions for doing so. Could someone point me in the right direction.

Sincerely

Glenn

Glenn,

This is a typical problem with a camera that has not been used for a long time. Culprits are dried lubricant, incorrect tension on the shutter curtains etc. Not an easy repair for a novice. I did just a quick search and came up with a service manual for a Pentax Spotmatic.

Link is here: http://www.robertstech.com/files/spot_sm.pdf

The S1a shutter is similar.

Good luck,

Jan

Thanx Jan - I'll have a look at the Spotmatic manual.

Have a great day

Hi,
If you need it, I can supply a copy of the S3 manual which covers nearly all of the S/H range.
Regards
Kim
