I own a Pentax MX, the camera works well most of the time, but ocasionally when shutting, the second curtain closes but does not finish its movement (The border stays visible), so the mirror stays locked. In those cases exposure is not correct... It happened to me three times in a 36 exposures film, but later when trying to reproduce it with the film unloaded, it happens like every 100 shots. It happened with different speeds.

I could finally reproduce it more often, putting the camera speed in B position, and just pressing and releasing the shutter, when done really fast the problem appears every 5-10 shots.

Have anyone experienced this problem with the Pentax MX... ¿Maybe it can be solved just with some cleaning?

Regards.

Yes, that is definitely a sign of needing a cleaning. The MX is fairly easy to disassemble. Have you ever opened a camera completely?

Hi Henry,

Nop, I have never done it, but I think being careful and organized it could be done, I even have the service manual of the camera with all the exploded diagrams, and every detail explained... Anyway I don't think I will try my first time with my Pentax MX, I am afraid to ruin it.

Yesterday I was observing a little bit further, and I discovered some black oily substance spot in between the border of the two curtains (I could see it without touching of course), in the place where the curtains borders stay one on top of the other.

This morning I went to a technical service in Madrid, Spain (where I live), and they told me they thought it was only a matter of cleaning, they asked me for 75 euros (aprox. USD 75) for doing the job Isn't that too expensive for a cleaning?

Regards,

Jose.

It's half the price I've had to pay to have a Spotmatic CLA'd in Paris.
Sounds pretty good.
