I have a Nikon FM with a mirror that goes up but does not go back down. Any suggestions?

Check to see if the mirror is sticking to the foam in the upper position. Nikon mirror damping foam turns to goo at about the age of your camera.

I removed that foam as I thought that was the problem but it didn't help. (And it was goo). Any more advice?

If the shutter is cocked and doesn't trip, you may have a mirror cage problem--this requires major disassembly and it quite involved.

Thanks for your advice. I'll pursue it. I thought that the mirror was an independent device but my understanding now is that it is directly connected to the closure of the shutter. My shutter is not working either.

How do you remove the top plate on a FM?
