Hi Luis,
This might sound simple, but is the rewind button still depressed or stuck inside the camera body? I've seen this happen with several other camera brands but not a Pentax (yet).

it appears slightly depressed, but since i only used the camera once, and owned it for such a short time not sure how far in/out it should go. i played with the button & sprockets to no avail though.

This is a common problem with the K-Series Pentax, luckily it's an easy repair. You'll need a small jeweler's philips screw driver. Place the body upside down on a towel. Remove the 3 screws and the bottom cover. Be sure not to disturb the round seal around the rewind button. With the upside down body facing you, you'll see a spring loaded lever directly to the right of the tri-pod socket. Cock the body with the wind lever. Now...pull the spring loaded lever towards you. The end of the this lever is black and comes from inside the body. The lever should rest "cocked" on the elbow shaped lever...the one to the right of the socket.

Hope this is helps your problem and it repairs your camera. Reinstall the bottom cover.
