I have an old Sanwa 70-210 telephoto which has a loose zoom. I still takes great pics, but slips unless held firmly in place and it's very awkward. |

Usually these have some kind of felt or other ring that rubs against the outer collar, and there's not much you can do to fix them once that wears out or loses its resiliency. It's a common problem even with some expensive zooms that should have been better, such as some of the Nikon AIS zooms. One thing I've seen that can work is if you can cut a strip of tape, electrical or the like, and apply it to the lens barrel where it goes under the zoom collar. It's not very attractive, but it will put a little drag on the zoom. |

With a bit of care you can modify the above idea to make the mod less noticeable. If you stick a thin strip of felt between the zoom ring and barrel with a strong double sided tape the modification will be hidden. The trick is to insert the felt and the adhesive tape with the release backing strip still attached. eg If you wish to insert a one inch length of felt into the gap proceed as follows - Cut a 4" length of double sided tape and stick the piece of felt at one end. Now carefully separate the remaining 3" of adhesive tape from the backing and cut the adhesive tape away from the stuck down piece of felt, leaving 3" of free backing still attached. Now fold the backing tape back on its self, making the fold about 1/2" from the 'inner' edge of the stuck down felt. Push the tape/felt into the collar/barrel gap so that the felt rubs on the barrel and holding the end of the felt flush with the edge of collar - use a thin piece of plastic or wood - carefully work the backing strip out. If you have chosen the correct thickness of felt you will find that it will be firmly held in place by the adhesive tape. |
