I'm going to build the Tomsey light source and shutter tester and am thinking of updating them a bit. Would one be wise to use LEDs or something other than a standard incandescent reflector bulb for the standard light source? In the shutter tester what modifications would make it more DMM friendly ? I have a Fluke 77 and don't feel like spending $200.00 to $300.00 for a new Simpson 260 the only quality analog still produced and supported I know of. Guess you might get Lucky on Ebay and buy a latter model Triplet or Simpson.
A related question is does anyone have a part number or even better a good source for the shutter tester Photo transistor ? I don't trust radio shack quality if they even still stock something like that.

A current-date shutter tester consists of a photodiode connected directly to a 3.5mm (1/8") jack that would fit into your PC's soundcard microphone input socket.
All you need then is a sound-recording software wit reasonable cursors (free audacity does good job).

I wonder if Simpson still makes the 260?
There are plenty on ebay at a good price if you can wait your turn.I agree that they are a rugged and accurate meter with a movement big enough for these old eyes to see.I use mine a lot when there will be others around watching so they won't know what I am doing )
I have a couple Tripplets but their test leads are hard to find with the miniature banana jacks.Ron G |

I actually like the Triplett and still use my old 310 now and then, but would want a 630 that takes the D an AA batteries for something like this, don't care about leads I work around that. So if you have a 630 especially a NS model. I just might be interested.

I may end up going the computer sound card route but I'd rather go stand alone if not to difficult.

I have a couple of 310s but I have so many meters that not having the correct leads for the Tripletts is not really a problem.Someday I will make up what I need if I ever can find the time.
I do not have a 630 however.
I built the soundcard shutter speed tester and it appears to work very well.It is consistant in any case.Ron G |
