I just purchased a canon a-1 off of ebay and was very excited to recieve my camera. After playing around with it and going through about 12 shots I've noticed something that wasn't happening before I started running the film through it. When I set the camera to shutter priority mode the meter readout just gives me the EEEEEE message. And also when I put it on aperture priority it doesn't always go to the aperture I have the dial and aperture ring on the lens set to. I was wondering if anyone could give me some help with this problem. Thanks. |

First rule of the A-1. Unless you are operating in full manual mode, never take the lens off of "A" (or the green circle if older FD lenses). If you want aperture priority, move the control to "Av" and choose a lens opening. Resist all urges to move the aperture to the value you want to use as it does not work that way. "EEEEE" is a generic error code. Try removing the lens and make sure the depth of field control is not in use (i.e. the red dot at the bottom of the lens mount opening is NOT visible. Then make sure the lens levers are in the proper location - the "stepped" one belongs at the bottom most portion of its slot. Put the lens back on "A" and remount. There is a manual here: http://www.butkus.org/chinon/canon/canon_a-1/canon_a-1.htm - please send him a donation for his wonderful site. |

I had the same problem with my eBay A-1 when I got it. I freaked out, messed around with it a couple of minutes with no results. Then I took off the lens, replaced it, and for some reason it started working. Never happened again. |

Thanks for the help. The stepped lever on the side is at the top of the slot instead of the bottom and is locked in place there. Is there something I can do to disengage it and move it back to the bottom? |
