I have an F-1 that has worked since owning it the last 20 years. now the shutter button stopped working. I have tried taking the camera apart to see if I could trip the shutter. that didn't work. I have a power winder that when attached, sounds like it wants to advance, but cant due to the shutter not working. does anyone have any suggestions?

I manage to get a old F1 (as opposed to the F1n) working with the same problem. I approched the camera from the bottom. Underneath you can trip the shutter. At the same time I moved the timer lever in the front of the camera and then it worked again. Unfortunately I returned the camera to it's owner and didn't take pics. If you upload a pic of the opened bottom of the camera, I probably can point you to the right place.

The pic is in a low resolution. but I think this is the F1 New. The aria were i tripped the shutter was in the red circle

Try following through the advance levers & electromagnets, starting from the right on the photo you have posted.
Lightly try the advance lever while watching the bottom & with an orange stick move the levers that prevent double exposures. You might try, same deal orange stick, straight to the left of the red circle there is an electromagnet, try moving the pull device that it activates. Looks like it pulls to the right in your image. Look carefully at the electromagnets & check for any iron particles or dirt that they may have attracted & hinder a full function of their operation. Just don't force anything & don't ding the coils. How does the rest of the unit look, are the curtains fully cocked & are they flat? Clean contacts! Has it been exposed to a strong magnet, color tv, airport X-Ray machine?
When the electronic shutters first came out people were placing them on top of their color tv's & that created problems, the camera had to be demagnetized. When did you last have it CLA?
On another note, when the F1's started being produced, you had to have twenty or twenty five years on the line to qualify. |

I have tried moving the lever within the red circle, but nothing happens.
Old School- i dont think I am as well versed on the workings of the camera, not sure what an orange stick is. I am not sure what levers prevent the double exposure as well. I have tried carefully without forcing all of the levers within the bottom of the camera, nothing happens though. Inspection of the camera is good. the curtain is in good shape. Also dont know what CLA means, but the camera has never been repaired or had any maintenance work for as long as i have had it.
any other suggestions or explanations would greatly be appreciated. If you need more photos uploaded, or the top of the camera, I would be glad to upload those as well.

Sorry! Thought you had some experience in this field.
CLA = Clean, Lubed, & Adjusted, an orange stick is like cuticle pusher for the nails on hands & feet.
Even though you have the positive attitude, suggest sending it out for service as the camera has done excellent for some 20 years, overdue for a full service. I would not like to see you get into an expensive repair & not really a good idea to learn on a complex unit as an F1.
The shutter curtains are not very forgiving on this model, not much thicker than aluminum foil. The coil wires are finner than a human hair. Find a less expensive camera to learn on, so you can understand the operation & function of everything. Try DAG camera service, he has a good reputation, but that is your call. I am sure there are other service centers that will treat you fair & you will be happy to have your camera up & running & to support them keeps them going so they don't close down. |
